Hans Wilhelm Kaufmann studied from 1976 to 1980 with Maritta Kersting at the "Robert Schumann" Conservatory in Düsseldorf and absolved further studies with Bernard Hebb at the "Hochschule für Künste" in Bremen. Numerous master classes and encounters with international artists have broadened his horizon. Subsequently he gave concerts in Germany and abroad, performed in productions for broadcasting companies in Germany, Kuba, Poland, Spain, and the USA, followed invitations as a juror in renowned international guitar competitions.

Furthermore Hans Wilhelm Kaufmann has a strong inclination to teach music, wrote articles on music tuition and held training courses. 1987 he became a lecturer in methodology and didactics of the guitar, and since 1993 he also teaches guitar at the "Hochschule für Künste" in Bremen.

Kaufmann is founder and artistic director of "bremen guitar art" and the "Rothenburger Gitarrenwoche", a summer-festival which after its start in 1982 meanwhile belongs to the guitar festivals with the longest tradition in Europe.
